It might seem that building bike paths and bike rental facilities is welcomed by everyone, but that is not the case. There are people who oppose it, despite the statistics speaking clearly.
Opponents of cycling would like to convince you that building cycling infrastructure, which includes bike paths and a sophisticated network of bike rental facilities, is a direct path if not to hell, then to some kind of permanent war zone culminating in a road apocalypse that threatens all road users, including (and especially) the cyclists themselves. While it is true that cyclist safety on the road can be improved somewhat, for example by introducing traffic calming zones, the facts speak absolutely clearly: With approximately 23 million rides in the USA on bikes borrowed from American bike rental facilities (statistics have been kept since 2007), there has not yet been a fatal accident involving a cyclist on such a bike. Of course, zero will not remain in this statistic forever – that is the law of large numbers – but at the very least, this is clear evidence that building bike paths is a step in the right direction, and should therefore definitely be given the green light in all our cities and towns! ed., photo archive
