US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, from the Obama administration, presented the budget for 2013. The total energy budget saw a 3.2% increase compared to fiscal year 2012. The good news is that a 21% increase in funding is going toward improving energy efficiency, electric vehicle development, and biofuel research. In numbers, this means that from the total amount of 27.2 billion USD dedicated to energy, 2.72 billion USD will go to support clean energy through the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
And where does the rest go?
-
14 billion USD goes to nuclear attack security and nuclear disarmament.
-
770 million USD goes to nuclear energy research (including 60 million EUR for research in nuclear waste management).
-
350 million USD for Advanced Research Projects - meaning "early-stage" research projects that could fundamentally change the rules of the game for clean energy technologies.
-
276 million USD for clean coal research and carbon capture and storage, etc.
-
260 million USD to support energy centers and energy innovation HUBs.
-
60 million USD for energy storage systems research.
-
12 million USD for research on fracking risks, i.e., hydraulic fracturing.
-
And more..
